Major General Boštjan Močnik (born 2 July 1974) joined the Slovenian Armed Forces in 1998 and currently serves as the Chief of the General Staff the Slovenian Armed Forces. He has dedicated his professional career to military service, accumulating extensive experience through a wide range of senior command and staff assignments at both national and international levels.
Prior to his appointment to Chief of the General Staff in 2025, Major General Močnik served as Force Commander (2023) and Commander of the 1st Brigade (2020). His earlier career included several key leadership roles within the General Staff and the Ministry of Defence, notably as Chief of the Capability Development Division (2018) and Chief of the Strategic Planning Section (2017) at the General Staff and Chief of the Multilateral Division (2016) at the Defence Policy Directorate of the Ministry of Defence. In addition, he has served as Battlegroup Commander in the 72nd Brigade, Commander of the 20th Infantry Regiment and in numerous other command and staff positions.
Major General Močnik has completed advanced military education, including studies in International Security and Strategic Leadership at the Royal College of Defence Studies, and in Security and Strategy for Global Leaders at King’s College, both in the United Kingdom. His international operational experience includes deployments to Kosovo (KFOR), Afghanistan (ISAF) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR ALTHEA).
Throughout his career, Major General Močnik has received numerous decorations in recognition of his service. These include the NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal of the Colorado National Guard and Distinguished Honor Order of Saint Maurice-Pelegrinus of the U. S. National Infantry Association.
Major General Močnik’s career reflects a sustained commitment to military leadership, international cooperation, and the ongoing development and operational effectiveness of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
