Since 1 October 2023, Lieutenant General Wien has been Germany's Military Representative to NATO and the EU.
He joined the German Armed Forces in 1982 as an infantry officer cadet and successfully served in various positions including infantry officer, platoon leader and company commander.
Between 1995 and 1997 he attended the 38th General Staff Course at the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College. His subsequent assignments included General Staff Officer at the Federal Ministry of Defence, Battalion Commander and Senior Military Assistant, as well as Personal Staff Officer to the Deputy Chief of Defence and Head of the German Joint Support Service. He gained first-hand NATO experience from 2010 to 2012 as Branchhead NATO Operations and Plans at the German Military Representation to NATO and EU.
During these years, Lieutenant General Wien deployed three times to KFOR and ISAF, where he commanded a multinational battlegroup.
From 2012 to 2013, Lieutenant General Wien studied at the National War College/National Defence University in Washington, D.C. He holds a diploma in economics and a master's degree in national security strategy.
After a short stint as Dean and Chief of Staff at the Federal College for Security Policy in Berlin, he took on an extraordinary assignment as Chief of Staff and Senior Military Assistant to the State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Defence, where he gained significant experience in military policy and political processes.
From 2017 to 2021, Lieutenant General Wien served as Deputy German Military Representative to NATO and the EU and Chief of Staff, where he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General
Prior to his appointment as the German Military Representative, he served as Vice President of the Federal Intelligence Service with the rank of Major General.
Wolfgang Wien and his wife Katrin live in Brussels. They are golf enthusiasts, parents of four children and proud grandparents of four grandchildren.
