After high school studies, R.A. Luca Conti joined the Italian Naval Academy where he graduated in 1991;
He then attended basic and advanced flight training with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.
Appointed ‘Naval Aviator’ in March 1994;
Until 1996, he continued operational training within U.S. Marine Corps Flight Squadrons;
1996-1999 Assigned to GRUPAER, training and operational AV-8B+ Italian Navy Squadron;
1999 With the rank of Lieutenant, appointed as Commanding Officer of Patrol Boat LIBRA;
2000-2008 Assigned back to GRUPAER, serving in different duties up to Squadron Commanding Officer from 2004 until 2008;
As a Naval Aviator, R.A. Conti took part in all training and operational missions which involved the Italian Navy aircraft carrier ‘GARIBALDI’. Overall, he has flown in his career more than 2000 hours of tactical jets, mainly on AV-8B+;
2008 Attended the 112th ‘Nato Defence College’ course in Rome;
2009 Commanding Officer of ITS SCIROCCO, a Multipurpose Frigate;
2010 Commanding Officer of ‘2nd Patrol Boat Squadron’ and instructor at the Naval Command School;
2011-2013, with the rank of Captain, worked as Chief of Staff of the ‘Fleet Air Arm Command’;
2014-2015 Commanding Officer of Aircraft Carrier CAVOUR;
2016 Assistant Chief of the Navy;
In 2017, with the rank of Rear Admiral and while assigned to the Navy Staff Plans and Policy Department, he attended the Senior Officer ‘High Defence Studies School’ in Rome (IASD);
2017-2020 Deputy Capability Director, Defence General Staff;
2020-2021 Deputy Head Plans and Policy, Defence General Staff;
2021-2024, with the rank of Rear Admiral UH, worked as Chief of Cabinet of the Joint Chief of Staff;
In June 2025 assumed his current position as National Representative to Nato and EU Military Committees.
