Nikolay Milkov

Nikolay Milkov was born on December 10, 1957 in Sofia.

He graduated from the French high school in Sofia and later on completed his higher education in the Department of International relations of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE).

His professional career began in the academic sphere and in 1991 he received a doctoral degree for his dissertation in the field of international relations and the most current history.

In 1992, he entered the public administration and initially held various positions as a civilian employee in the Ministry of Defense. He then worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until returning back to the Ministry of Defense, where he was appointed to the position of Permanent Secretary.

He has been working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1997, holding various positions in the diplomatic service such as: Head of “Foreign Policy Planning, Information, and Coordination” Department, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs with special responsibilities for European countries, including Southeastern Europe, and security matters. In this capacity, he was a member of the Commission for Export Control and served as Secretary of the Interdepartmental Committee for the membership of the Republic of Bulgaria in NATO. He served as Ambassador of Bulgaria in Romania and Canada, Consul General in New York, as well as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the Republic of France and the Principality of Monaco and a Permanent Representative to UNESCO.

He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the caretaker government by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev on August 2, 2022.

As of May, 7, 2023 Ambassador Milkov assumed his post as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to NATO.

Nikolay Milkov is married with two daughters.

He is fluent in English, French, and Russian with an excellent understanding of Spanish.
