Military Committee

The Military Committee (MC) is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council, both having been formed only months after the Alliance came into being. It is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, and gives direction to the two Strategic Commanders.

NATO and the Republic of Korea strengthen their cooperation at the military staff talks in Seoul
12 May. 2025On 12 May 2025, a military delegation from NATO, led by Brigadier-General Ungüder Eray, Deputy Director of the Cooperative Security Division, NATO International Military Staff (IMS), met with their counterparts from the Republic of Korea, headed by Major General Kwon Young Min, in Seoul. The military staff talks aim at strengthening the practical military cooperation between NATO and the Korean Defence Forces.

NATO Chiefs of Defence meet in Brussels
14 May. 2025Brussels, 14 May 2025 – The 193rd NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session took place at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, today. Thirty two Allied Chiefs of Defence discussed NATO’s vigilance & deterrence, continued support to Ukraine, and preparations for the NATO Summit in The Hague in June. The final meeting of the day saw the Ukrainian Chief of Defence, General Sikyrsky, join the NATO-Ukraine Council virtually from Kyiv.

NATO reinforces military partnership with Japan during the military staff talks held in Tokyo
09 May. 2025 - 10 May. 2025From 9 to 10 May 2025, NATO’s delegation of military experts, led by Brigadier-General Ungüder Eray, Deputy Director of the Cooperative Security Division, NATO International Military Staff, travelled to Tokyo for military staff talks with their Japanese counterparts, headed by General Shirai Ryoji. The talks provided an opportunity to reinforce and deepen the already ongoing military cooperation between the Alliance and Japan, as well as to highlight the analogies between the challenges faced by the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific regions.
