Military Committee (MC)

The Military Committee (MC) is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council, both having been formed only months after the Alliance came into being. It is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, and gives direction to the two Strategic Commanders.

On 26 June 2024, NATO hosted military staff talks with Japan, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The discussions focused on the ongoing partnership, security challenges, resilience building and future opportunities for cooperation. The meeting took place under the auspices of the NATO Cooperative Security Division.

On 19 June 2024, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) Office of the Gender Advisor (GENAD) hosted its monthly Deep Dive session on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) and the Gender Perspective. It explored how CRSV requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach encompassing policy development, operational guidance and coordinated efforts across both military and civilian spaces.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee delivers a keynote speech to the first Senior Executive Seminar at NATO Defense College Rome

On 20 June 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, attended the first Senior Executive Seminar (SES) at the NATO Defense College in Rome, where he delivered a keynote speech on “NATO at 75 and the Changing Security Landscape.” The SES focused on pressing military and security challenges directly influencing political decision-making in NATO. Panel discussions included Russia’s war on Ukraine, NATO deterrence and defence strategy and the Euro-Atlantic industrial capacity. The seminar is designed for senior advisors to Heads of State and Government in Allied nations and was opened by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mr Mircea Geoană.
