NATO Secretary General meets world leaders in New York

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg held talks with several world leaders in New York in the margins of the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg meets with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abadi

On Tuesday (29 September 2015), the Secretary General and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met as part of continued political dialogue between NATO and Russia. Mr. Stoltenberg and Mr. Lavrov discussed the situation in Ukraine, as well as the need for transparency and predictability in relation to military activities. They also discussed the situation in Syria. 

In talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Mr. Stoltenberg discussed NATO’s defence capacity efforts to support the Iraqi security forces as well as security challenges in the region. He also met separately with New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully to exchange views on the NATO-New Zealand partnership and cooperation on operations. 

The Secretary General also met with Leila Zerrougui, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

On Monday, Mr. Stoltenberg attended the opening of the UN General Assembly and addressed the UN Peacekeeping Summit. He held talks with the Chief Executive of Afghanistan and the Prime Minister of Tunisia. 

On Wednesday, the Secretary General will be in Norfolk, Virginia, together with the North Atlantic Council and the Military Committee to take part in the change of command ceremony at Allied Command Transformation.
