Lieutenant-General Eugénio Francisco Nunes Henriques was born in Castanheira de Pêra, Leiria, Portugal, in July 1962. He joined the Portuguese Military Academy in October 1979.

He attended the following curricular career courses: Infantry Course at the Military Academy; Army General Staff Course and General Officers Course. Among others, he also attended the Command and General Staff Course of the Brazilian Army, and the United Nations Staff Officers Course, in Sweden.

Throughout his career, he served in several Units of the Portuguese Army, some departments of the Armed Forces, and in the Portuguese Ministry of National Defence. From 1985 to 1989, he was designated as platoon leader and company commander in the 2nd Infantry battalion/1st Mechanized Brigade. Between 1989 and 1994 he was posted as Chief of the Training Section and Commander of the 1st Students Company, at the Military Academy. In 1995 through 2001, and 2003 through 2005 Lieutenant-general Nunes Henriques held two distinct teaching posts at the Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares (Portuguese Army Command and Staff College), in the areas of Peace Support Operations, and Combined Joint Operations. During that period, he joined several training events in the Republic of Mozambique, and the Republic of Angola.

From 2001 to 2003 he assumed command of the 1st Mechanized Battalion/ 1st Mechanized Brigade and, since January until July 2003, he was deployed as Commander of the 6th Portuguese Battalion in the United Nations Mission, in East Timor.

From 2005 to 2009, as a Colonel, he was appointed the Military Advisor to the Portuguese Minister of National Defence, and between 2009 and 2011 he performed in the same capacity for the Army Chief of Staff. At the Military Academy (2013 to 2015) he was Head of the Department for Military Sciences and Technologies, and Deputy Director of Education. During that time, LtGen Nunes Henriques was deployed to Mozambique as Chief of the International Military Observer Team North, for a period of six month.

In 2015 and 2016, after being promoted to a general, he assumed command of the Combined Arms School. From January 2017 to February 2018, he served as Chief of Cabinet to the Portuguese Chief of Defence. In July 2018 he took office as Director of the Portuguese Army Staff.

Promoted to Lieutenant-general in April 24, 2019, he has been assigned to his present position as Portuguese Military Representative (MILREP) to NATO and the EU Military Committees in Brussels, since August 5th, 2019.

Lieutenant-General Eugénio Henriques is married to Maria Luisa, and they have 2 children.
