Brigadier General David Humar was born on 26th November 1968 in Šempeter pri Gorici. He was educated at primary school in Šempas and the Secondary School of Army Branches and Services in Sarajevo, which he completed in 1987 as Infantry Sergeant. The same year, he was engaged in the school as instructor. In 1990, he completed Army Military Academy in Belgrade and was promoted to Second Lieutenant.

He was appointed as reconnaissance platoon commander. After joining Slovenian Territorial Defence he assumed the duties of training assistant at the Regional Territorial Defence Headquarters, he worked as Deputy Battalion Commander, operational training assistant at the Officer Candidate School of the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) and later as Head of the SAF Officer Candidate School, Command and Staff School, Centre of military Schools. Within the SAF General Staff, he performed the duties of Chief of Joint Personnel and Education Division. In October 2005, he assumed the six-month duty of Defence Reform Advisor of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina at NATO Headquarters Sarajevo and later led mid-term force planning as Assistant to the Chief of the SAF General Staff. Brigadier General Humar was National Military Representative at SHAPE in Mons, Belgium. His duties also included duty of Senior Military Representative and Commander of NATO Headquarters in Skopje in 2010 and 2011, as well as Brigade Commander and Chief of the Joint Operations Centre and Chief of Staff at the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces.

Prior to his current appointment, he was Deputy Chief of General Staff of Slovenian Armed Forces.

During his professional career, Brigadier General Humar served as commander of units up to the brigade level and delivered military lectures at military schools and the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana. He is author and co-author of several professional works, including the tactical manual on infantry companies and platoons.

He attended several courses and trainings at various educational institutions, namely SAF General Staff Course, General/Flag Officers and Ambassadors Course at NATO Defence College in Rome, and Masters programme at the U.S. National Defense University – ICAF. He also completed the first international Generals Course of the Italian Armed Forces.

He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2008.

Brigadier General Humar assumed the position of Military Representative of Slovenia to NATO Military Committee and EU Military Committee on 1st August 2015.

He speaks English, Serbian-Croatian and Italian.

He is married and has three children.
