Refugees

Three weeks before the Wall was erected on 19 July 1961, NATO journalist Jacques Florent and one of his colleagues decided to travel to Berlin to see the situation for themselves. They were moved by the distress of the thousands of refugees in Marienfelde camp, most of whom had left everything behind in search of a better life. To retrace the steps of these refugees, the two journalists managed to enter the East clandestinely and afterwards to escape, just as hundreds of Eastern Berliners did every day.
