NATO Deputy Secretary General calls for a global approach to tackle global challenges

Today (29 June 2020), NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană participated in the virtual European Council of Foreign Relations (ECFR) Annual Council Meeting.

Speaking in a session about the “Security Cooperation after Brexit”, he underlined that the future of Europe is inextricably linked to the future of the transatlantic Alliance. Stressing the importance of NATO as an indispensable forum for security cooperation, he emphasized that NATO and the EU are natural partners, working together to ensure peace and prosperity in Europe, which has become even more essential in these challenging times.

Speaking about the COVID-19 crisis, the Deputy Secretary General highlighted that NATO-EU cooperation has further intensified over recent weeks to strengthen the resilience of our societies.   

The Deputy Secretary General concluded by calling for a global approach to tackle global challenges. He emphasized the importance of closer cooperation among partners to defend common values and shared interests. He identified a need to work closely with like-minded countries and organizations, including the EU, to defend the global rules and institutions that have kept the world safe for decades.
