As director of policy planning, Dr Benedetta Berti is responsible for providing strategic analysis and advice to the Secretary General and develop new policy initiatives, collaborating across NATO international and military senior staff, as well as with the broader expert community, including think-tanks, academic institutions and non-governmental organisations.

She is Associate Researcher at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy at Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Visiting Professor at the College of Europe and a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. An Eisenhower Global Fellow and a TED Senior Fellow, prior to joining NATO Benedetta has held research and teaching positions at West Point, The Institute for National Security Studies and Tel Aviv University, among others. Her work has focused on internal conflict, integration of armed groups, post-conflict stabilization and peace-building, as well as violence prevention and reduction and crisis prevention and management.

Dr Berti is the author of four books, including "Armed Political Organizations. From Conflict to Integration" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Her research has appeared, among others, in Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, the National Interest, the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times; as well as in Civil Wars, Democratization, Government & Opposition, Mediterranean Politics, the Middle East Journal, Parameters, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Terrorism and Political Violence.  Dr Berti has been awarded numerous awards, including the World Politics and Statecraft Fellowship, the Lady Davis Fellowship and the Order of the Star of Italy (order of Knighthood).

She holds a BA in Oriental Studies from the University of Bologna, and a MA and PhD in International Relations from The Fletcher School (Tufts University).
