Lieutenant General İsmail Üner
Military Representative – Turkey
After graduating from Turkish Air Force Academy, Lieutenant General ÜNER completed Flight and Combat training at 2nd Main Jet Base, Izmir, Turkey. As a career fighter pilot, he served in various Flight Squadrons as Wingman, Wing Leader, and Weapons and Tactics Officer until he joined Turkish Air Staff College.
Following his graduation from Air Staff College in 2006, Lieutenant General ÜNER returned to operational flying with several operational leadership positions at 8th Main Jet Base, Diyarbakır, Turkey. He later served as Combat Plans Chief in NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre 7 at Larissa, Greece from 2011 to 2013. Subsequently, he was assigned to NATO Allied Air Command, Ramstein, Germany, as Director of Operations Center from 2013 to 2014.
Between 2014 and 2018, he assumed the positions of Deputy Commander, Operations Director and Commander, respectively, at National Air Operations Centre/TURJFAC. During his command, he was responsible for the air operations including Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch.
Lieutenant General ÜNER then served as Deputy Chief of Staff Plans at NATO's Headquarters Allied Air Command, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. During his tenure, he was responsible to the Chief of Staff for directing, monitoring and coordinating operational capability development staff functions and developing and implementing policy related to operational issues.
A graduate of Turkish Air Force Academy, Flight Training School, and Turkish Air Staff College, Lieutenant General ÜNER has extensive experience both as an operational commander and a fighter pilot having more than 2,700 flight hours mostly in F-4 "Phantom" and F-16 "Fighting Falcon". His academic credentials also include a Masters in Industrial Engineering.
He is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and assumed the position of Turkish Military Representative to NATO on 30 August 2019.
Lieutenant General ÜNER is married and has two children.
