Lieutenant General Janusz ADAMCZAK was born on 21 March 1964 in Poznan, Poland. Having commenced his studies in 1983 at the Armoured Officer College, Poznan, he graduated in 1987 and was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant.
He served initially as a platoon leader and, during the following years, as Company commander and Battalion Chief of Staff in the 49th and 6th Mechanized Regiments. In 1995, he completed the Advanced Course at the US Army Armour Centre, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and continued his military education at the National Defence University in Warsaw.
Following his graduation from the National Defence University, in 1997, he served as the Chief of Operational Section in the 12th Armoured Brigade within the 8th Coastal Defence Division. Thereafter, he went on to serve as the Chief of Staff in the 6th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, within the 12th Mechanised Division, and then Chief of the Operational Branch (G3) of the Divisional HQ.
In June 2003, he was deployed with the first rotation of the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq, where he led the planning branch of the HQ Multinational Division - Centre-South. In 2004, he was assigned as the Chief of the Command and Staff Training Branch in the Land Operations Directorate of the Army Staff. In July 2006, he began his studies at the US Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
Upon his return, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Strategic Planning Directorate (P5) at the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2007. In April 2008, he assumed command of the 12th Mechanized Brigade in Szczecin. In October 2008, he was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served as the Deputy Commanding General for the Coalition in HQ Regional Command East.
From 2011 to 2014, he commanded the 11th Armoured Cavalry Division, Zagan, and was promoted to Major General on 15 August 2011. From February 2014, he assumed command of 2nd Mechanized Corps, Land Component Command, in Krakow. He was promoted to Lieutenant General on 15 August 2014 and appointed as Chief of Staff at Joint Force Command Brunssum. From April 2018 to July 2022, he was the Polish Military Representative to the NATO and EU Military Committees, before taking over as Director General of the NATO International Military Staff.
Lieutenant General Janusz Adamczak is married to Arletta and they have three children.
