The NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow visited Skopje on Wednesday, 18 July 2012 as part of a visit to the three countries in the Balkans that aspire to NATO membership.

“The Chicago Summit made clear the importance that NATO continues to attach to the Open Door Policy and to the Western Balkans region. We want to move enlargement forward,” the Deputy Secretary General said. "Courageous political decisions are needed so that your country's strategic goal of NATO and EU membership can be achieved.
