167th NATO Chiefs of Defence meeting

Brussels – NATO and Partners’ Chiefs of Defence will gather at NATO Headquarters for the 167th Military Committee Chiefs of Defence meeting on 25-26 April 2012. General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee will chair the discussions of the top level military officers on the evolution of NATO and NATO-led operations, operational lessons and future ways of cooperating with partners. NATO’s two Strategic Commanders Admiral Jim Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and General Stéphane Abrial, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation will participate in all discussions.

Head of the Table

Chiefs of Defence will meet with NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen to have a strategic discussion on the Alliance’s priorities and challenges for the medium and longer term.

In the session with ISAF Partners, the Military Committee will focus on the NATO Strategic Plan for Afghanistan. Chiefs of Defence will be updated first hand by Gen. John R. Allen, Commander ISAF.

In their respective meeting formats, the Chiefs of Defence of Russia, Ukraine and Georgia will participate in debates to evaluate the practicalities of NATO military partnerships and discuss ways to deepen cooperation.

Other sessions will address NATO’s operation in Kosovo (KFOR), NATO’s counter piracy Operation Ocean Shield (OOS), NATO’s counter terrorism Operation Active Endeavour (OAE) and the Libyan Operation Unified Protector (OUP) Lessons Identified.

The outcome of these two-day discussions, from which the Military Committee will finalize its military advice and guidance to the North Atlantic Council, will be instrumental to the NATO Summit in Chicago (20-21 May 2012).

Accreditation

Journalists wishing to cover these opportunities will be able to access NATO HQ on presentation of a NATO accreditation pass or a valid press pass. Journalists without NATO accreditation who wish to attend one of the events should inform the NATO IMS Public Affairs office no later than 23rd April 2012 of their interest to do so.
