Mauritanian parliamentarians visit NATO

On 21 September 2011, the NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised a visit to NATO Headquarters for a group of Mauritanian parliamentarians from the Senate and the National Assembly, who were visiting Brussels as part of NATO’s public diplomacy activities under the Mediterranean Dialogue.

Topics discussed include NATO’s transformation and outreach to the Mediterranean and the Middle East region; NATO’s military cooperation in the framework of the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD); NATO’s operations in Libya and Afghanistan; emerging security challenges and how they affect NATO, and NATO’s scientific cooperation with partner countries.

The group met with Mr. Nicola de Santis, Head, Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Countries Section in the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, Dr. Rolf Schwarz, Political Officer from the Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Countries Section in NATO’s Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, Major General Carlos Branco, Director, Cooperation and Regional Security Division of the International Military Staff, Mr Robert Ayasse, Deputy Head of the Operations Section, Operations Division, Dr Jamie Shea, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, and Dr Philippe Fougerolle and Dr Christian de Wispelaere from the Science for Peace Programme in NATO’s Emerging Security Challenges Division.

The Mauritanian group also had a discussion on NATO’s current political agenda with the Permanent Representative of Turkey, H.E. Haydar Berk, and the Permanent Representative of Italy, H.E. Riccardo Sessa, and the Permanent Representative of France, H.E. Philippe Errera.
