Dutch Submarine awarded for service in “Operation Ocean Shield”

On 9 December, the submarine “Zeeleeuw” arrived in Lisbon after two months patrolling the Somalian coast as part of NATO’s “Operation Ocean Shield”. The crew was awarded NATO’s “Non-Article 5 Africa Medal” for itscontribution to fighting piracy off the Horn of Africa.

NATO is actively engaged in deterring pirate activity in response to a United Nations mandate. The operation is directed by Allied Joint Force Command Lisbon and the Zeeleeuw” is one of several ships which make up NATO Task Force 508.
