Top diplomats debate security challenges at GLOBSEC 2010
On 13 and 14 September, the GLOBSEC 2010 Bratislava Security Conference brought together top-level diplomats to debate key regional and global security issues. Topics included Afghanistan at the crossroads, eastern partnerships, the new Euro-Atlantic security architecture and NATO’s new Strategic Concept.
The session on the Alliance’s new Strategic Concept looked at the meaning of Article V on collective defence, NATO enlargement, balancing resources, new challenges such as energy and cyber security, and the Alliance’s relations with Russia and other international organizations.
The fifth annual GLOBSEC conference on foreign politics and security in Central Europe was the largest so far. More than 500 participants from both sides of the Atlantic participated in seven interactive panel debates and two informal evening sessions.
Participants included nine ministers and state secretaries of diplomacy and defence departments, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle, US Special Envoy for Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Victoria Nuland, and several representatives of top think-tanks.
The event was organized by the Slovak Atlantic Commission in Bratislava, in cooperation with the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Commission’s Representation in Slovakia and NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division.
