From 21 August to 3 September, forward air controllers from 13 Allies’ military forces received hands-on training to prepare them for combat in Afghanistan. Taking place at the US combat training centre in Volk Field, Wisconsin, the exercise “Ramstein Rover 2010” tested the controllers with scenarios they will soon be experiencing in theatre. To support forces on the ground and avoid civilian casualties, forward air controllers lead pilots to their targets using information they receive from video cameras mounted on planes and observations on the ground. If they believe civilians could be in danger, forward air controllers are trained to call off an air strike, even at the last minute.
