A special British unit was deployed on 1 April 2010 to help commanders and troops in Helmand province develop a better picture of local society. The aim is to help soldiers and commanders make more informed decisions by increasing their understanding of local culture, politics, economics, history and social norms. The deployment follows the International Security Assistance Force’s counter-insurgency tactics of putting the Afghan people at the centre of the operation’s efforts.
