NATO welcomes and supports the initiative taken by the United Nations General Assembly in designating 8 June as World Oceans Day.

With oceans covering more than 70% of the earth’s surface and containing 99% of its living space, the protection of the world’s oceans is of the utmost importance. Not only are oceans crucial for sustaining life, but they facilitate the commercial transport of goods and generate billions of dollars in revenue and jobs each year.

NATO is an active contributor to peace and security in the maritime sphere working to meet the security challenges of the 21st century.

Our efforts include maritime surveillance operation Active Endeavour launched in October 2001 – part of a global fight against terrorism – and the counterpiracy operation Allied Protector off the Horn of Africa,  helping to improve safety of maritime routes, particularly in the Gulf of Aden.  The Alliance is also following closely possible security implications of climate change in the High North region.

To support the UN initiative helping to raise awareness of the importance of the world’s oceans I appeal to all the Alliance Navies to acknowledge and mark this significant day.
