NATO revamps its web site
The NATO web site, www.nato.int, is currently being revamped to make it easier to navigate and provide a clearer overview of content, timeliness of information and transparency.
Offering, as before, news and real-time coverage of key NATO events, the site's homepage will feature a range of simple menus and shortcuts which make it easier for the visitor to find exactly what he is looking for. As such, it will act as a portal.
An online ‘encyclopedia’ of topic pages, NATO A to Z, provides a one-stop shop on every area of the Alliance’s work and also offers new layers of content to the public by means of related information boxes.
Other features include improved search capabilities, more video material and a better visibility of the NATO TV Channel on the Internet, as well as historical documents.
Background
Revamping the Organization’s web site has been identified as a strategic priority by the North Atlantic Council, as a means “to support further improvement of our strategic communications by the time of our 2009 Summit”, as described in article 10 of the Bucharest Summit Declaration.
Following an International Call for Bid, ]init[, a German company with extensive experience in implementing web sites for government and national authorities, was selected in 2008 to install a new platform allowing to manage content more easily and offer a better service to visitors.
First launched in 1991, the NATO web site is visited on a monthly basis by an average of 800.000 unique visitors. It is the Alliance’s single most consulted tool for information on NATO policies and for conveying NATO’s messages.
