United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan visits NATO

Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, met with NATO Secretary General in a bilateral meeting, and then with the North Atlantic Council in ISAF Format (representing all the troop contributing nations).

He set out the main elements of the ongoing US strategy review, including the need for stronger and more coordinated civilian and military efforts, the importance of a broader regional approach, the strategic importance of successful elections this year in Afghanistan, and US thinking on the Afghan-led, internationally-supported counter-narcotics effort.  

Ambassadors welcomed the briefing, and expressed their views on a number of the issues raised by Ambassador Holbrooke.
