The inaugural session of the NATO-Ukraine Commission took place on Friday, 10 October 1997, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

This first meeting held at Ambassadorial level follows the historic signing of the NATO-Ukraine Charter in Madrid on 9 July 1997.

The Commission welcomed the early establishment of the permanent diplomatic mission of Ukraine to NATO and the accreditation of its first Head of Mission earlier this week.

The Commission agreed "Initial Elements of a 1997 Work Plan for the Implementation of the NATO-Ukraine Charter".

The Commission confirmed that a NATO-Ukraine Ministerial meeting will be held in December in Brussels. The Commission in Ministerial Session will review the status and prospects of NATO-Ukraine cooperation, as well as consider a work plan for 1998.
