The NATO Science Committee announces the "Science for Peace Programme",a cooperative initiative between NATO members and Partners (1).This new Programme aims at assisting Partner countries in theirtransition towards a market-oriented and environmentally-sound economyand will give a new dimension to the Science Committee's ongoingcooperative activities by enabling Partner scientists to engage inapplied R&D projects jointly with NATO counterparts. In helping tostrengthen the socioeconomic infrastructure of the Partner countries,it is expected that the programme will contribute to overall stabilityand peace.
The objectives of the Programme are:
- To support applied science and technology projects that relate to industrial, environmental or security related problems;
- To help Partner scientists to increase contacts in theNATO science community, while building a stronger scienceinfrastructure in their home countries.
SfP projects will be of a cooperative nature, jointly carried outamong NATO and Partner countries. Projects involving more than onePartner country will be encouraged. Projects will have a duration ofthree to five years.
NATO funding to participants in research institutions inPartner countries, as well as in Greece and Turkey, will be providedfor experts, scientific equipment, computers, software, travel,training of project personnel and project-specific consumables. For allprojects, NATO funds for Partners must be complemented with a nationalcontribution which will, as a minimum, include salaries of personnelworking on the project.
Proposals should be submitted to the NATO SfP Programme Office on a four-page standard application form which is available from the address below. Deadlines for submitting proposals are: 30 September 1997, 15 January 1998 and 15 May 1998.

- Partner countries eligible for SfP funding: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrghyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (Turkey recognises the Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name), Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
Partner countries not eligible for SfP funding: Austria, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland.
