On Thursday (6 March 2025), members of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme were in Athens to foster collaboration with the Greek academic and scientific community.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Claudio Palestini, Head of SPS underlined, “The SPS Programme approaches challenges as opportunities to further scientific excellence, exchange of knowledge and technological innovation, in order to improve the security and lives of our societies.”

Representatives across the Greek academic, scientific and innovation community engaged in discussions on security challenges such as the environment, energy security and the use of advanced technologies to improve security. The SPS Programme supports solutions to these challenges and promotes collaboration between Greek scientists and partners from all over the world. Dr. Anastasios Gaitanis, General Secretary of Science and Innovation at the Ministry of Development of Greece highlighted, “Collaboration is key.”

The NATO SPS Programme fosters civil security-related research activities – projects, trainings and workshops, while placing great attention to the involvement of young researchers and students from Allies and NATO partner countries. Building bridges and keeping the technological edge are at the core of NATO’s goals and the SPS Programme is one of its most effective tools to achieve these missions.
