Richard Armitage at NATO HQ

US Deputy Secretary of State, Richard L. Armitage, came to NATO HQ on 27 March to brief the North Atlantic Council - NATO's most important decision making body- on a number of pressing issues.
He reaffirmed NATO's vital role in the campaign against terrorism, underlining the fact that 16 other NATO member countries are supporting the United States on the ground in Afghanistan; he stated that the United States supports "the most robust possible enlargement" at the Prague Summit in November; he briefed the North Atlantic Council on Vice-President Dick Cheney's trip to the Middle East; and discussed Iraq and the issue of weapons of mass destruction.
Deputy Secretary of State, Armitage, last visited NATO HQ on 20 September, following the invocation of Article 5 of the Alliance's founding Treaty.
