NATO military chiefs discuss Euro-Atlantic defence
On 13 January 2022, the NATO Chiefs of Defence started their second day of meetings with a dialogue with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who laid out his priorities and perspectives on the security situation.
The next session of today focused on of the current global security environment and NATO’s ongoing Deterrence and Defence Posture. ''Since 2014, NATO implemented the largest adaptation and has been stepping up its response to the threats and challenges of today and tomorrow. We will continue to improve the readiness of our forces and to strengthen and modernise the NATO Force Structure to meet current and future needs'', the Admiral added.
The Chiefs of Defence also met with their Ukrainian partner, Lieutenant General Zaluzhnyi who briefed them on the current security situation in and around his country as well as the developments in their ongoing defence reforms. After that their Georgian partner, Major General Matiashvili explained the reforms and new defence capabilities developed through the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package. ''Both Ukraine and Georgia are facing extremely difficult circumstances, and are not only ensuring their own security but also implementing impressive social and security reforms that will benefit all their people. We reiterated our continued support for their territorial integrity and sovereignty. And NATO will continue to ensure they have the tools to ensure their own security and sovereignty, but also further contribute to the overall European security'', he concluded.
This was the first time the Military Committee met in Chiefs of Defence Session in 2022. There is a second meeting scheduled in May at NATO Headquarters in Brussels and another later this year in an Allied member state.
