NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson is meeting with President Bush, members of the Cabinet and leading Senators in Washington D.C., 9-10 October, to discuss terrorism and contributions to Operation Enduring Freedom.
He also discussed the campaign against terrorism with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, as well as leading ministers of the Canadian government during a two-day visit to Ottawa 8-9 October. Canada created a cabinet-level committee on 1 October, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Manley, to formulate Canada's response to the terrorist attacks; on 9 October, Canada announced that it would be willing to contribute a large combat force comprising equipment, as well as manpower.
Other issues which are high on NATO's agenda were also discussed during the meetings in Ottawa, including the situation in the Balkans and the possible replacement of US troops in the area to free them up for Operation Enduring Freedom. Also discussed were enlargement, NATO-Russia relations and defence reform. Lord Robertson also attended the 2001 Ottawa Plenary Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which unanimously condemned the terrorist attacks against the United States.
