In a conference organised by the Instituto de Estudos Estrategicos e Internacionais, Portugal, high-level speakers participated in discussions on the impact of the 11 September attacks on the identity, values and security of Europe, the United States and the Mediterranean.

Participants from NATO member countries and five of the seven countries participating in NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue (Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia) discussed issues such as identity and citizenship, European foreign and defence policy priorities, the United States and the international security agenda, fighting international terrorism and prospects for renewed international order. The conference was held in Lisbon, 8-9 November.
