Mr Leszek Miller, appointed Prime Minister of Poland following parliamentary elections in September 2001, came on his first visit to NATO HQ on 5 December, to meet with Lord Robertson.

During a joint press point, both interlocutors explained that they had discussed many issues, including Poland's contribution to the NATO-led peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo and to the action against terrorism under the provisions of Article 5 and as part of the US-led coalition. They also discussed NATO's relations with Russia and Ukraine and the modernisation process of Poland's armed forces to meet NATO standards. Lord Robertson underlined the need for all NATO members to invest in defence as a means of guaranteeing security for future generations.
