Addressing a virtual audience at an event organised by the Atlantic Council on Friday (11 December), NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană emphasised values and adaptation as key for future success of the Alliance.

The Deputy Secretary General noted that the West is increasingly challenged both economically and militarily. He underlined that keeping an edge on technology is also the essence of NATO’s deterrence and success.

You cannot win and fight the wars and competitions of the past with the instruments of the past. You have to imagine the future and be able to adapt and adjust,” he said.

Mr. Geoană said that besides NATO there is no other organisation in the world when it comes to sharing the same values, economic might and military strength.

The Deputy Secretary General recalled that the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has launched NATO 2030, a forward-looking reflection process that serves three objectives: keeping NATO strong militarily, making NATO stronger politically, and taking a more global approach to deal with global challenges.

The event marked the launch of the Atlantic Council publication, ‘NATO in America’, a series of 20 articles called ’20 ideas for NATO in 2020’ which look in original ways at the future of the Alliance.
