Defending NATO territory was at the heart of Exercise Adventure Exchange 2000, which took place in Northern Greece from 9 September to 4 October. It involved the deployment of command posts and supporting elements from 15 NATO member countries. They shared logistic support and procedures to train for the common defence of NATO territory.
The NATO command involved, the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (Land) (AMF(L)) is a rapid reaction force trained to deal with all situations from humanitarian relief to war fighting. Exercise Adventure Exchange 2000 is one of the major training priorities undertaken by the AMF(L) every year.
Nearby in Greece, Turkey and in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean seas, another major training exercise involving maritime, air and amphibious forces is taking place (9-25 October). Exercise Destined Glory 2000 aims to improve NATO's southern region (Allied Forces Southern Europe - AFSOUTH) capability to carry out combined, joint operations and to maintain its readiness to respond to crises. Forces from eight NATO countries are participating in this exercise (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States).
