Support for flood stricken Hungary and Romania

Following the serious flooding in the Tisza River region, Hungary, the Government of Hungary requested NATO's Euro-Atlantic Disaster Relief Co-ordination Centre (EADRCC) to issue an urgent international appeal for 2.000.000 sandbags on 18 April. The request was circulated to the Points of Contact for International Disaster Response in NATO and Partner Countries the same day. Demands were rapidly satisfied and the Hungarian Ministry of Interior was able to cancel the request on 20 April.
As far as the EADRCC is aware, more than 5,5 million sandbags have been pledged/delivered to the stricken country. More than 60% of these were pledged due to the efforts of the EADRCC, which means that the Centre could have fully satisfied the request on its own.
In Romania, water levels have been slowly decreasing. However, disaster response is hindered by the fact that units involved in the relief activities ran out of fuel. The Romanian Government has therefore requested 1000 tons of diesel fuel and has widened its request for 1,000,000 sandbags. As far as the EADRCC is aware, Denmark, Moldova and Poland have provided Romania with some of the requested relief items.
