James Appathurai - What is NATO doing beyond its borders?
NATO Experts series
What is NATO doing beyond its borders, and how do the Alliance’s efforts to support partners abroad help protect its citizens at home? Join James Appathurai, NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, to find out.
In recent years, NATO’s neighbouring regions have grown increasingly unstable. To the south, terrorism, arms smuggling and drug trafficking make for a tenuous security situation; in Ukraine, more than 10,000 people have died since Russia began its aggressive actions in 2014. By supporting its partners abroad with training and security cooperation, NATO strengthens their ability to manage instability, making its members at home safer.
