The annual Building Integrity (BI) Discipline Conference took place at NATO Defense College on 10 and 11 October, 2018 in Rome, Italy. Experts on BI, including representatives from NATO Headquarters and Commands, as well as academics and practitioners from member and partner countries discussed the role of BI in defence, security and education.

The conference focused on the development of synchronisation and coordination among stakeholders.  Participants validated the requirements and identified training and education solutions in accordance with NATO’s Education Training and Evaluation and Exercises Policy and Global Programming, which aims to achieve alignment and coordination of efforts in further sustaining and developing the discipline.

Colonel Terje Haaverstad (Retired), represented the Centre for Integrity in the Defence Sector (CIDS), Norway, (Department Head for the BI Discipline and a contributing nation to NATO BI). He stressed the importance of NATO training facilities and those of other related institutions to update and validate training requirements and existing training solutions within the field of Building Integrity.  Based on the exchange of information and fruitful discussions during the meeting, the Discipline Alignment Plan could now be finalised.

Representing the BI team at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Dr Lidra Zegali briefed on the development of BI in education and training. She highlighted the requirements identified for BI discipline, as well as the progress made in including BI in the curricula in educational institutions within NATO and nations.

Representatives from solution provider institutions showcased the opportunities they offer for the BI discipline. These included the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, the Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Sarajevo, the NATO Stability Policing Centre of Excellence in Poland, and the Public Affairs Regional Centre in Skopje.

The conference was organised by CIDS in cooperation with the NATO BI team.
