NATO Deputy Secretary General visits Azerbaijan for major Women, Peace and Security Conference

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller is in Baku, Azerbaijan today (20 September 2018) to meet with senior government officials and to address a major international conference on Women, Peace and Security.

The conference, jointly organised by NATO and Azerbaijan is the first since NATO leaders agreed a revised Women, Peace and Security Policy and Action Plan at the Brussels Summit in July 2018.

Integration, inclusiveness and integrity. These will be the watch-words as we move forward with our agenda to make gender equality an everyday reality for women and girls everywhere,” said the Deputy Secretary General in her speech.

While in Azerbaijan, the Deputy Secretary General met with President Aliyev, Vice President Mrs Aliyeva, Speaker of Parliament Mr. Asadov, Defence Minister Hasanov and other senior officials. 

She also participated in the closing ceremony of the Jeyranchol NATO/PfP Trust Fund project and awarded certificates to Afghan officials and academics for a course devoted to the civilian oversight of the armed forces in the Afghan context. This course took place in the framework of DEEP Afghanistan.  

She also met with students from ADA University.
