NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Germany for its vital contributions to the Alliance in talks with the new German cabinet, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, on Tuesday (10 April 2018). Speaking at Schloss Meseberg, the German government’s retreat outside Berlin, Mr Stoltenberg praised Germany’s leadership of a multinational battlegroup in Lithuania and its decision to add more than 300 troops to the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces.

The Secretary General also welcomed Germany’s increased defence spending, as the Alliance adapts to the most serious security challenges in a generation. He outlined preparations for the NATO Summit in July, which will take the next steps for NATO's future. While in Berlin, Mr Stoltenberg also met separately with Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
