Statement by the NATO Secretary General on the election of UN Secretary-General António Guterres
I warmly welcome the election of António Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations. I am confident that under his leadership, the UN will continue to fulfil its vital role in tackling the global challenges of the 21st century.
Based on a shared commitment to international peace and security, NATO-UN cooperation contributes to addressing those challenges. The relations between our two organisations have grown steadily over the past years. Today, our dialogue and cooperation encompasses a broad range of issues: from Women, Peace and Security and the Protection of Civilians, to Alliance support for enhancing UN peacekeeping efforts.
I look forward to working with Secretary General Guterres to further advance and deepen the relationship between NATO and the United Nations.
