Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel met with the Latvian Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube as well as the Minister of Defence, Mr. Raimonds Bergmanis during his visit to Riga, Latvia on 13-14 April 2016.
Speaking with LtGen Graube, the Chairman welcomed Latvia’s strong support for NATO’s continued adaptation and its commitment to the Alliance in an uncertain security environment. “Latvia plays an important role by contributing to the NATO Response Force and NATO’s Resolute Support Mission as well as being a Host Nation of a NATO Force Integration Unit and the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence” said General Pavel.
Discussions with Mr Bergmanis focused on the enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, the increased defence spending of Allies and the main decisions that will be taken at the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw in July.
While in Latvia, General Pavel participated in Allied Reach 16, a high level seminar organized by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation which brought together approximately 150 senior military and civilian leaders. This conference provided an opportunity for a frank exchange of views on the most important security challenges ahead for NATO in the run up to the Warsaw Summit and the requirements needed to meet them.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Denis Mercier and the Latvian Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube, the Chairman stressed the role of the Allied Reach conference is "contributing to a forward-looking and proactive approach to NATO adaptation, enabling NATO senior military leadership to look ahead and provide advice on NATO’s future strategy, posture, and long term adaptation in light of the changing security environment."
