Chiefs of Defence of the 28 Allied countries will meet from 21-22 May at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels for their second Military Committee meeting of 2014. General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee, will chair the two-day discussions among Allies and Partners on the key challenges facing the Alliance in the run-up to the Wales Summit in September.
The NATO Summit this year will be an important milestone for the Alliance and it is in this context that the NATO Chiefs of Defence will meet for one of their regular meetings at NATO HQ this week. Sharing views on global security, NATO Chiefs of Defence will discuss the Russia-Ukraine crisis and its implications for NATO, assess the situation the Middle East and North Africa region and evaluate NATO’s readiness to respond to crises. With special partners Ukraine and Georgia, the Military Committee will explore increased opportunities for military-to-military cooperation, such as joint training and exercises, in order to enhance interoperability.
Nations will mark the forthcoming conclusion of the ISAF operation, take further steps to modernise the Alliance and reaffirm the bond between Europe and North America. In order to deliver clear and robust military advice to the Heads of States and Governments at the Summit, Chiefs of Defence will review, among other topics, Education, Training, Exercises and Evaluation that will become even more important after current events in the security architecture in Europe. They will also discuss NATO’s current and future mission in Afghanistan, the Alliance Maritime Strategy and other activities aimed at maintaining interoperability with partners and keeping the Alliance strong, flexible and ready to face future challenges.
Throughout the two days, NATO Chiefs of Defence will endeavour to provide concrete and unequivocal military advice for the forthcoming Defence and Foreign Ministerial meetings called in support of the Summit.

Photos and video of all opening sessions will be available online at www.nato.int/ims shortly after each meeting. The joint press conference will not be live streamed but made available on the NATO TV flip server and on the NATO website after the event, and on request by broadcasters through EBU.
Accreditation
All media representatives wishing to cover those opportunities should inform the NATO IMS Public Affairs Office no later than 20 May 2014 (see contact below).
Journalists in possession of a valid 2014 NATO permanent media pass do not need to request accreditation.
Media representatives not in possession of a 2014 NATO Media pass and wishing to attend those events are invited to contact the NATO IMS Public Affairs Office no later than 20 May 2014 (see contact below).
They will have to present an ID document with a picture and a valid press card (provided by a recognized national professional body of a NATO country – i.e. Government, Professional association, Union of journalists).
Those media representatives not having a valid press card (as listed previously) are invited to send a signed letter from their editor to the NATO IMS Public Affairs Office no later than 20 May 2014 (see contact below)
