Mark Rutte takes office as NATO Secretary General

On Tuesday (1 October 2024), Mark Rutte took office as the NATO Secretary General. He was welcomed to NATO Headquarters in Brussels by the outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, whose term ends after ten years. Mr Rutte and Mr Stoltenberg laid a wreath during a ceremony at the NATO Memorial to the Fallen.

NATO Military Committee farewells Jens Stoltenberg

Today, 30 September 2024, the NATO Military Committee formally farewelled Mr Jens Stoltenberg, whose tenure as Secretary General is coming to an end. He will be succeeded by Mr Mark Rutte, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands on 1 October 2024.

NATO Allies select Mark Rutte as next Secretary General

On Wednesday (26 June 2024), the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg. Mr Rutte will assume his functions as Secretary General from 1 October 2024, when Mr Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the helm of the Alliance.

NATO Allies select Mark Rutte as next Secretary General

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg received the prestigious Henry A. Kissinger Prize in a ceremony on Friday evening (10 November 2023) at the American Academy in Berlin for his contributions to transatlantic relations. The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Speaker Emerita of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, delivered the laudatory remarks.

North Atlantic Council extends mandate of the NATO Secretary General

NATO Allies agreed on Tuesday (4 July 2023) to extend the mandate of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg by a further year, until 1 October 2024. The decision will be endorsed by NATO Heads of State and Government at the Vilnius Summit.
