NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme supports a wide range of activities, including research projects run by high-performing women scientists in leadership positions. NATO SPS helps these leading scientists contribute to the development of scientific research and technologies, partnerships and innovative solutions, with a direct positive impact on security. On 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the NATO SPS Programme is proud to present two remarkable scientists, devoted to enhancing societal security and resilience in times of crisis.

The NATO International Military Staff Celebrates its 58th Anniversary

Brussels, NATO HQ, 10 February 2025 – The Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (IMS), Lieutenant General Janusz Adamczak and the Deputy Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Lieutenant General Andrew M. Rohling opened the annual IMS Day with keynote speeches. Following their addresses to the staff, the IMS Day Exhibition, which showcased the history of NATO IMS, was unveiled.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits Ukraine

On 07 and 08 February 2025, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Cavo Dragone paid a visit to Ukraine. This is the first official foreign visit undertaken in the Chair’s new position. This visit underscores the NATO Military Authorities’ unfettered support to Ukraine.

Finnish Air Force leads NATO Air Policing in Iceland for the first time

Four F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and some 50 personnel from the Finnish Air Force are currently deployed to Iceland to support NATO’s Air Policing mission and strengthen airborne surveillance and interception capabilities, under Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness Needs (ASIC IPPN).

NATO Secretary General hails strong cooperation with Iraq

NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, visited Iraq on 4-5 February 2025, together with Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli. During his trip, he met with the President, Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid, the Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, and other high level officials of the Iraqi government, with whom he exchanged views on a range of topics, including the role of NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), the NATO-Iraq partnership, and the security situation in the region. He also met with the NMI Commander, Lieutenant General Lucas Schreurs, other NMI personnel and the NATO diplomatic community in Baghdad.
