Born in Oostburg, the Netherlands, on October 24, 1947. He is married to Chris Deroover and has three grown children, Isabel, Wouter and Alexia.

MA in Philosophy and Arts (Romance Philology) from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

Diplomatic career:

  • Joined the Foreign Service in 1971.
  • 1973-1977: Permanent Mission of Belgium to the European Union.
  • 1977-1981: Belgian Embassy in Athens.
  • 1981-1984: Permanent Mission of Belgium to the European Union.
  • 1984-1986: Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry.
  • 1986-1989: Belgian Embassy in Rome.
  • 1989-1993: Deputy Permanent Representative of the Belgian Mission to the United Nations in New York, and Representative to the UN Security Council (1991-1992).
  • 1993-1997: Director General for Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry.
  • 1997-2002: Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union.
  • 2002-2006: Belgium’s Ambassador to the United States.
