In 1985, Xavier WATTEEUW ended the Royal Military Academy as Industrial Engineer in Construction. In 1986, after being received as Platoon leader in the Engineer School, as Lieutenant, he commands the 2nd Company of the 4th Battalion Engineer. In 1987, he is appointed to be deputy operations officer in the same unit.
In 1988, he is selected to supervise construction works within the Commando center in Kota Koli (Equator province, Congo) during two years.
Back in Belgium, within the Engineer School Study Office he is responsible for the procurement of equipment for the Engineer units.
From 1992 to 1995, as Captain, he teaches road construction in the Engineer School. After his staff course, he is appointed to the 4th Engineer Battalion as Operations Officer. During this period, he serves 6 months in Bosnia as Chief Plans in the Engineer Branch of Headquarter SFOR.
In December 1999, he becomes Major and Project Officer for ‘Bare Base systems’ until he is selected for the General Staff Course in Belgium followed by the ‘Curso Superior de Estado Mayor’ in Argentina.
Back in Belgium in 2003, he teaches in the Engineer School as Chief of the Tactical Department before becoming Lieutenant-colonel in 2004 and being appointed as Engineer School Course Director in 2006. During this period, he leads the working group ‘Military Operations in Urban Terrain - Engineer’.
From 2007 to 2009, he commands the 4th Engineer Battalion. During this period, he is deployed within the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon as Chief of the Engineer Detachment of the Belgian-Luxemburg Battalion.
He is then appointed as assistant to the Chief of the Staff Department Operations and Training and becomes Colonel in December 2009.
Between June 2010 and December 2013, he is Defence Attaché in Buenos Aires responsible for Argentina, Brazil and Chili. Then as Assistant Chief of Staff for Defence Planning in HQ Alliance Command Transformation, he leads NATO Capability requirements. Since August 2016, he is appointed as Belgian Deputy Military Representative to the EU Military Committee. In June 17, he became General Major. In January 18, he will be appointed as Belgian Military Representative to NATO and to the EU Military Committee.
Xavier Watteeuw is married to Anne and they have two children.
