Colonel Patrick FAUTSCH has been appointed Military Representative to NATO and the European Union on 1 July 2013.

Patrick Fautsch was born in Luxembourg on 19 March 1963. He joined the Army in 1983. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy in Brussels in 1987, he completed his basic infantry officer training at the École d’application de l’infanterie in Montpellier, France, in 1989. Subsequent military education included the Belgian infantry company commander course in 1993, the Diplôme d’état-major from the École d’état-major in Compiègne, France, in 1996 and the Senior Course of the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy, in 2002. He further completed the Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in 2008.

 

After serving as reconnaissance and anti-tank platoon leader he held various commands at company level, followed by different staff functions in personnel and operations branches as well as head of the national arms control group.

He participated in operations UNPROFOR in 1992, as platoon leader, and SFOR in 1997, as national contingent commander.

His international experience includes assignments as Deputy Military Delegate to the Western European Union from 1998 to 2002, as well as Deputy Military Representative to the European Union from 2000 until 2002. From 2003 to 2005 he was coordinator for military affairs within the Luxembourg Representation to the European Union, in preparation of the Luxembourg EU presidency.

Prior to his appointment as Military Representative, Colonel FAUTSCH was head of plans and policy since 2006. From 2011 onwards he was also advisor to the Minister of Defence on strategy. His responsibilities included defence planning and major procurement strategies and programmes, as well as transformation issues. In particular he was closely involved in the concept phase of the Army reform launched in 2007 and acted as Chief of Transformation.

He is fluent in English, French and German.

Commandeur dans l’Ordre de Mérite of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, he is also Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur of the Republic of France.

Patrick is married to Sylvie.
