Developed jointly by NATO and Russia, the STANDEX programme for the stand-off detection of explosives was recently tested in a real-life situation in a major European city. It could help prevent terrorist attacks such as those carried out on the London, Madrid and Moscow public transport systems. The next step is to transfer the demonstration technology to the industrial sector, so that it can be developed for the commercial market.
