Ladies and Gentlemen,

Weare about to unveil the “NATO Horse” – the Alliance’s contribution toan innovative project called “Horse Parade 2005”. NATO is not usuallyin the habit of parading, of showing off. And very few people areimpressed when they first see this Headquarters. But when you find outwhat is actually achieved by the extremely dedicated people who workhere, you cannot help but be impressed.

Asit happens, the Alliance has a number of very positive qualities thatare also often attributed to horses – strength, reliability,adaptability. And it is that last qualification – adaptability – thatperhaps best characterises NATO.

ThisAlliance has adapted first to the end of the Cold War, and continuestoday to adapt to the emergence of new threats. At the beginning ofthis new century, embracing new members and engaging in dialogue andcooperation with other nations and international organisations, theAlliance projects security and stability across this entire continent,and even beyond. And that is nothing to be modest about.

The “NATO horse” that we are about to unveil will spend the next fewdays here at NATO Headquarters for the Delegations and staff to admire.I am sure that the horse will also impress the NATO Defence Ministerswho will meet here later this week.

Le “cheval OTAN” vaensuite passer quelque temps à Bruxelles et dans quatre autres villesde Belgique pour la commémoration du 175 e anniversaire de la créationde ce pays. Il sera le symbole d’une OTAN en pleine transformation, quise tourne vers de nouveaux publics et vers les jeunes générations. Cesera aussi un petit témoignage que l’Alliance donnera, pour lui marquersa grande reconnaissance, à la Belgique qui accueille l’OTAN depuisprès de quarante ans, et où mon mari et moi-même, et avec nous toute lacommunauté OTAN, nous sentons tout à fait comme chez nous.

Mesdames et messieurs,

Nous allons maintenant dévoiler le “cheval OTAN”. Son nom – “Alliantis”– n’est plus un secret. Mais je suis tout aussi curieuse que vous devoir à quoi il ressemble.

Sa conception a été l’objetd’un véritable concours auquel ont participé, ici à Bruxelles, lesétudiants et étudiantes de la prestigieuse École Nationale Supérieuredes Arts Visuels. Qu’il me soit permis de remercier tous ceux et cellesqui ont pris part à ce concours. Il ne pouvait y avoir malheureusementqu’un seul lauréat, mais c’est à tous et à toutes que nous souhaitonsune brillante carrière artistique.

J’aimeraismaintenant demander au lauréat du concours, Pierre Rousteau, des’avancer pour recevoir nos félicitations, et aussi un diplôme, et pourdévoiler “Alliantis” avec moi.
