Statement by NATO Secretary General on the Afghan elections

This is an historic event for Afghanistan and a crucial step towards meeting a goal shared by the entire international community: to help Afghanistan become a democratic, peaceful and prospering country. The enthusiasm with which the Afghan people went to the polls is an unmistakable sign that they are ready to take forward the democratic process.

I would like to thank the NATO forces and those of all ISAF partners for their important contribution to the peaceful conduct of these elections. The Alliance will remain committed to supporting Afghanistan's security and stability.
