Joint press point with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras

Prime Minister, I am very glad to be in Athens. We have had  excellent talks on the challenges we face and on implementing we took at the Wales summit.

Greece has been a committed Ally for over 60 years. Committed to our shared security. Committed to our shared values.

We thank you for all the contributions you make to our shared security. Greek troops are playing an important role in Kosovo. Greece supports our ISAF mission in Afghanistan. And Greece plays an active role in our political consultations.

This commitment has been sustained despite difficult times. Throughout, Greece has remained an active and effective member of our Alliance. And for over 60 years, NATO has been committed to keeping Greece safe.

We discussed the security challenges we face. In Eastern Europe and in North Africa and the Middle East.

Russia’s actions in Ukraine are in breach of international law. They have severely damaged trust. And they pose a major challenge to Euro-Atlantic security.

In the Middle East and North Africa, ISIL and other extremist groups are spreading violence and instability. And returning foreign fighters pose a risk to our own security.

We face many challenges in many ways and  from many directions. This is why we must keep NATO strong. We must work with our partners to  bring more stability to our neighbourhood. And we must keep the bond between Europe and North America rock solid.

So I count on your continued support as we work to turn the important decisions we took at the Wales Summit into reality.

Because a strong NATO is the best guarantee of our shared security.
